After many years of debate around how and when to introduce the European Unions agency workers directive, the Agency Workers Regulations (AWR) was passed by the Labour Party in 2010 and European Directive 2008/104/EC comes into force on 01 October 2011.

The Agency Workers Regulations (AWR) ensure the protection of temporary agency workers by applying the "principles of equal treatment in terms basic working and employment conditions", as they would have been entitled to had they been directly recruited to the job. In the UK this is subject to the completion of a 12 week qualifying period of continuous work with the same hirer and in the same role.
